Golf Glossary Of Terms

So you can't tell the difference between a bogey and a birdie? Then this glossary might just be for you.


Ace: A hole-in-one.

Albatross (double eagle): Scoring three under par for a hole, which means holing out with the first shot on a par four or the second shot on a par five.

Birdie: Scoring one under par on any hole.

Blade/Forged: A solid piece of metal is beaten into the desired clubhead shape.

Blast/Explosion: A shot from a bunker in which the club strikes the sand before the ball.

Bogey: Scoring one over par for any hole.

Break/Line: The movement of a putt dictated by the contours of the green.

Bunker: A sand trap

Cavity back: A clubhead made by molten metal being poured into a mould.

Chip: A low running shot onto the green.

Divot: The piece of grass taken after the ball is struck.

Dogleg: The directional turn of a hole.

Double Bogey: Scoring two over par on a hole.

Draw: Shaping the ball from right to left in the air for a right-handed player.

Driver: Intended to be the club in the bag that hits the ball the farthest.

Eagle: Scoring two under par for a hole, which means holing your second shot on a par four or scoring a three on a par five.

Fade: Shaping the ball from left to right in the air for a right-handed player.

Fairway/Short Grass: The area intended to receive a player's tee shot.

Flier: A ball struck from the rough, which carries unusually far.

Flop: A shot in which the clubhead travels underneath the ball, causing it to go very high, very fast.

Fore: A term used to alert fellow golfers that an airborne golf ball might strike them.

Fringe: The grass that bridges the fairway to the green.

Green Fee: The cost of playing a round of golf

Green: The area where the hole is located (where players putt).

Handicap: A system used to equalize the abilities of differently skilled players for scoring purposes.

Heel: The area of the clubface closest to the golfer.

Hook: A shot that travels dramatically from right to left in the air for a right-handed player.

Hosel: The part of the clubhead where the shaft is attached.

Hybrid/Utility Club: A club that is part iron, part wood, that generally replaces a player's longer irons.

Knockdown/Stinger: A shot that flies very low through the air.

Lie: How well (or poorly) the ball is sitting on the turf.

Lip-out: When a putt catches part of the hole then changes direction.

Mulligan: To replay a shot.

OB: When a shot travels outside the boundaries of the hole.

Par/Even: When the amount of strokes taken corresponds to the par of the hole. Three on a par three, four on a par four, etc.

Pitch: A short-range shot that travels fairly high into the air.

Plane: The angle at which the club is swung.

Rating: The average score of a scratch golfer at a course.

Rough: The thicker, longer grass next to the fairway.

Scratch: An advanced player who consistently scores par or better for entire rounds.

Setup: Consists of a player's grip, stance, posture and ball position.

Shaft: The long neck of the golf club that builds torque throughout the swing.

Shank: When the ball flies at right angles to the player.

Slice: A shot that travels dramatically from left to right for a right-handed player.

Slope: The average score of a higher handicap golfer (20) on a particular course.

Snowman: Scoring an eight on a hole.

Toe: The part of the clubface furthest away from the player.

Up & Down: Essentially, a successful kind of recovery when the player holes the ball within two shots.

Whiff: A player swings yet misses the ball.
